The September 2026 storm
On September 2, 2026, a downburst with winds near 125 km/h tore large sections of roofing off homes in Downsview, North York, according to the Northern Tornadoes Project's survey. Hail the size of ping-pong balls fell across Toronto, and CatIQ's first estimate put insured losses for the two days of storms at $563 million.
Wind-creased shingles and hail bruising often cannot be seen from the ground, and a roof hit like that can start leaking weeks later. One customer called us after "heavy hail and windstorm" damage and wrote that we were "very quick to respond."

What insurance usually covers
Damage from hail, wind and falling trees is usually covered. Damage from age, wear and poor maintenance is not, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. That is why dated photos taken right after the storm matter: they show the adjuster that the damage was sudden, not gradual.

Stay off the roof. If it is safe, prevent further damage, for example with a tarp; insurers generally reimburse reasonable costs. Photograph everything and keep every receipt. Report the damage to your insurer as soon as possible. Expect a proof of loss form, which the Insurance Bureau of Canada says is typically due within 30 days of the insurer's request.

Ask your insurer for the reason in writing and for its final position letter from its complaints officer. After that you can take the case to the General Insurance OmbudService. Ontario's regulator, FSRA, does not mediate individual denied claims, so that is the route.

Does home insurance cover hail damage to my roof?
Usually, if hail caused it. Not if the damage is wear and tear, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Will insurance pay for a whole new roof?
That is the insurer's call, based on the damage and your policy. We document the damage with dated photos and an itemized estimate. We do not decide coverage.
How long do I have to make a claim?
Report it as soon as possible. The proof of loss form is typically due within 30 days of the insurer's request (Insurance Bureau of Canada).
Can I pick my own roofer?
Yes. If your roofer's price is above the insurer's estimate, you pay the gap, so talk to the adjuster before work starts.
Should I tarp the roof myself?
